New For 2013

The base 911 Carrera, Carrera S, and their drop-top cabriolet versions remain the only new 991-series 911s for the 2013 model year, while the 911 Turbo and Turbo S remain on the 997-series chassis. Though not officially announced as of this writing, we’re expecting all-wheel drive to make its way onto both 991 models.

Exterior

The exterior is one of the main selling points of the 2013 Porsche 911. The exaggerated nose is something of a throwback to its 1960s roots, and its design has stood the test of time, never going out of style. Prospective buyers have the choice of 16 different color options, including eclectic choices like racing yellow or emerald green metallic. The wheel size varies from 19 to 20 inches, making them one of the main focal points of the profile view.

Interior & Cargo

The 2013 Porsche 911 is unusual for a luxury performance car in that it actually has room to seat four people. Of course, the rear seating is miniscule, but drivers can choose to use the rear for added luggage space. The Carrera offers 3.7 cubic feet of luggage, and 4.8 cubic feet of cargo space in total.

The main attraction of the interior is the design rather than the cargo space. Drivers have the choice of a whopping 18 different interior color options, two more than the number of exterior color options. Although the interior is decorated with less wood trim than in other luxury automobiles, the design is sleek and comfortable.

Leather seating is standard. Driving in extreme weather conditions is made more comfortable by the heated and cooling seats in the front, and the driver seat also has memory settings. The driver and front passenger each receive lumbar support, a major comfort for road trips. There are heated mirrors, as well as fog lights. Power locks are included, and the convertible also offers a power top, in addition to a rooftop glass window for rear passengers that will make their cramped environs seem more spacious. Meanwhile, the coupe comes with a sunroof.

The 2013 Porsche 911 comes with a number of entertainment features, although it should be noted that there is no satellite radio available. Prospective buyers will have to evaluate whether a car that starts at over $80,000 should have satellite radio. To its credit, the 911 does have MP3 capability, DVD audio, and a grand total of nine speakers. There is also an optional voice recognition system. The polished feel of the interior is enhanced by the LCD screen, which accommodates a navigation system. The 2013 Porsche 911 also comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety

Safety features of the 2013 Porsche 911 include six airbags, as well as parking assist. Illuminated entry helps with entry and exit in conditions of compromised visibility. An anti-roll bar and electronic stability system both help ensure a stable ride. With a vehicle as valuable as the 2013 Porsche 911, a quality theft-protection system is a must and the 911 delivers in this regard, as there is a theft-deterrent alarm system.

Driving Experience

The driving experience of the 2013 Porsche 911 is arguably the finest on the road, and represents the main trump card that it holds over other luxury vehicles. While there are cars that offer more interior features, very few can threaten to match the performance of the 2013 Porsche 911. Of course, the level of performance that one receives depends heavily on the particular trim level. The engine for the base Carrera trim is a 3.4-liter, V-6 engine. It offers 350 horsepower and 287 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the Carrera S brings a 3.8-liter, V-6 engine. The Carrera S also has 400 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The transmission for the Carrera is a seven-speed, manual transmission.

Meanwhile, the Turbo and Edition 918 trims bring more horsepower, although they share the same basic 3.8-liter, V-6 engine. The base Turbo offers 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, while the Turbo S has 530 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The Edition 918 shares the same horsepower and torque figures as the Turbo S. The Turbo offers a 6-speed manual transmission standard. On all trim levels, an optional seven-speed, dual transmission is available.

Regardless of the trim level, drivers can expect to receive premium acceleration. From a standing still, it is estimated that the 2013 Porsche 911 goes from zero to 60 in anywhere from 2.7-4.1 seconds. The steering is sharp, as there is a 17.4-inch turning radius. Additionally, the speed sensitive steering and sequential shift control are handy standard touches.

The 2013 Porsche 911 would never be confused with being an environmentally friendly vehicle, and this is reflected in the fuel economy readings. It is estimated that the Carrera gets 16-20/24-28 mpg city/highway, with the lower totals corresponding with the less-powerful engines. Of course, poor fuel economy is to be expected with any performance sports car, and so the fuel economy totals are in line with the competition.
